Common manual handling hazards for logistics and DC workers
- Roll cages, pallet jacks and dock plates in high-traffic areas.
- Long carries and pushes across large distribution centre floors.
- Cool room and variable-temperature transfers.
- Coordinating handling tasks with other workers and equipment at once.
On the floor
A full roll cage on a wet dock ramp
A loaded roll cage, close to 300 kg, has to go down the dock ramp to a waiting truck. It's been raining, the ramp is slick, and the usual practice is to walk in front of the cage and let it roll. One worker is on the cage, the truck driver is on the phone.
Takeaway: Pushing and pulling is where sudden force injuries happen. The Pushing, Pulling and Carrying module covers staying behind or beside a cage on a slope, checking the surface first, getting a second person, and stopping the job when the environment has changed.
