Manual handling weight limits in Australia

There is no legal maximum lifting weight in Australia. Work health and safety law requires employers to identify hazardous manual tasks and manage the risk, and the Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks deliberately sets no single number, because how heavy a load is matters less than how high, how far, how often and in what posture it is handled. The 16 kg and 55 kg figures still quoted on warehouse floors come from a national standard withdrawn decades ago.

The short answer

If you are looking for "the number", it doesn't exist in current Australian law. No WHS Act, WHS Regulation or code of practice in any state or territory says a worker may lift up to X kilograms. What the law does say is that the person conducting a business or undertaking (your employer, in practice) must manage the risks of hazardous manual tasks so far as is reasonably practicable. A task becomes hazardous through force, repetition, posture, duration or vibration, and weight is only one input into force.

Where the 16 kg and 55 kg figures come from

Australia used to have a National Standard for Manual Handling, published in 1990. It suggested that lifts above roughly 16 kg should be risk assessed, and that loads above about 55 kg should not be lifted without mechanical assistance or a team lift. That standard was withdrawn when the harmonised WHS laws and the hazardous manual tasks code replaced it. The numbers outlived the document: they are still repeated in inductions, on posters and in job ads, which is why so many workers believe a legal limit exists.

Treating those numbers as a rule cuts both ways. It can make a 14 kg carton handled four hundred times from floor level look "safe", and it can make a 20 kg lift at waist height with good grip look "illegal". Neither is true.

What actually makes a lift risky

The code of practice looks at the task, not the label. This is the checklist a supervisor or safety officer would run through, and the same one the free course teaches:

Two or three "higher risk" answers on a modest load is a hazardous manual task. One "higher risk" answer on a heavy load is too.

What to do instead of guessing a limit

  1. 1Check the weight if it's marked, and treat an unmarked load as unknown until you've tested it with a careful tilt.
  2. 2Look at the task, not just the carton: where it starts, where it ends, how often, and what your body has to do in between.
  3. 3If any factor in the table above sits in the higher-risk column, change something: raise the load, move closer, split it, use a trolley or pallet jack, or get a second person.
  4. 4If the task can't be changed by you, raise it. Under WHS law that is your employer's problem to solve, not yours to absorb.

Questions people ask

Is there a legal maximum lifting weight in Australia?
No. Australian work health and safety law does not set a maximum weight a worker may lift. The duty is to identify hazardous manual tasks and manage the risk, and the Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks deliberately avoids a single number because weight is only one of several risk factors.
Where do the 16 kg and 55 kg limits come from?
From an older national manual handling standard from the early 1990s, which has since been withdrawn. It suggested assessing the risk for loads above around 16 kg and treated loads above about 55 kg as needing mechanical help or a team lift. Those figures still circulate on the floor, but they are no longer in any current Australian law or code.
So can my employer make me lift anything?
No. Your employer has a legal duty to manage the risk of hazardous manual tasks so far as is reasonably practicable. A load that is too heavy, awkward or frequent for the person and the situation is a risk the employer must control, whatever the number on the carton.
What is a safe weight to lift at work?
It depends on how high, how far, how often, in what posture and by whom. The same 15 kg carton can be safe at waist height, close to the body, a few times an hour, and hazardous from floor level, above the shoulders, or several hundred times a shift. Judge the task, not just the weight.
Is there a different limit for women or younger workers?
There is no legal weight limit for anyone in Australia, and the code of practice does not set different figures by sex or age. The risk assessment should consider the individual doing the task, which is a matter for the employer's controls, not a fixed number.
Does this course teach a weight limit?
No, because there isn't one. The free course teaches how to recognise a hazardous manual task using the same risk factors the code of practice uses, and what to do about it: change the task, use equipment, get help, or raise it with a supervisor.
