  • Picking means thousands of repeated reaches, bends and carries per shift. Learn what turns that repetition into risk.
  • Practical guidance on pick faces below knee and above shoulder height, and how to handle them.
  • Scenario modules cover rate pressure, double-carrying and end-of-shift fatigue — the moments injuries actually happen.
  • Short, mobile-friendly modules you can finish between shifts.

Common manual handling hazards for pick packers

  • High-repetition picking — hundreds of small lifts per shift that add up over time.
  • Awkward reach heights at pick faces, especially bottom shelves and top racking.
  • Repetitive packing motions at a bench or station.
  • Rate pressure and peak periods that encourage rushing or shortcuts.

On the floor

Bottom-shelf picks in a peak week

It's the week before a sale and the pick rate target is up. The fastest-moving SKUs are on the bottom shelf of the pick face, so every pick is a bend to below knee height, a twist to the tote on the trolley, and back — several hundred times a shift. Nobody's carton is heavy; the worker's lower back is sore by Wednesday.

Takeaway: Frequency and posture are hazards even when the load isn't. The course's Reducing Manual Handling Risk module covers what you can change yourself (trolley height, facing the tote, splitting long runs) and what to raise with a supervisor (slotting fast movers at waist height).

Questions

FAQ

Yes. Repetition and posture matter as much as weight — frequent light handling is a common source of injury in picking roles, not just heavy lifts.

About an hour across eight short modules, plus a free 20-question assessment you can do at your own pace.

Yes. Rate pressure is treated as a risk factor in its own right: the modules on recognising and reducing risk look at how rushing changes posture, grip and decision-making, and what a safer response to a busy period looks like.

The course covers the handling side of picking rather than any particular system. The same posture, reach and repetition principles apply whether you're picking to a scanner, a voice headset or a paper list.

After you pass the free assessment you can add an optional Certificate of Completion for $39 AUD. It shows your name, the course name, your result and the date, with a unique ID an employer can verify. It is non-accredited.

No. It is non-accredited general awareness training. Warehouse Handling Academy is not a Registered Training Organisation and this course is not HLTWHS005 or any other unit of competency.

This is non-accredited general awareness training and does not issue a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. Always confirm your employer's specific training requirements.
