Why cold is different
The carton did not get heavier. You got colder.
Cold-store injuries are rarely caused by heavier loads. They come from handling ordinary loads with less grip, less flexibility and less room to move than the same job would give you on an ambient dock.
Gloves cost you grip and feel
You cannot feel where a carton's weight sits through a cold-store glove, so you grip harder than the load needs. More force for the same box, hundreds of times a shift.
Cold muscles do not stretch
Coming off a break into a minus-twenty chamber, your muscles are stiffer than they were ten minutes ago. The lift that was fine before the break is not the same lift now.
Layers restrict how you move
A freezer jacket limits how far you can bend, turn and reach. People compensate by twisting from the waist instead of moving their feet — one of the fastest ways to hurt a back.
Floors are not reliable
Condensation at the chamber door, ice under racking, meltwater where loads have been sitting. Grip underfoot changes between one aisle and the next.
Exposure limits break the rhythm
Rotations in and out mean you are repeatedly restarting cold. Work gets compressed into shorter bursts, and rushing is where technique goes first.
Vision and communication suffer
Breath fog, misted eyewear and hoods make it harder to see a hazard and harder to call out to the person helping you lift.
A shift in the chamber
Last pallet before the break
You have twenty minutes left in the chamber and one pallet to finish. The cartons are 12 kg, the top layer is above shoulder height, and your gloves have been wet since the second rotation. You want it done before the break, so you reach rather than reposition the step.
What the course would have you notice: three risk factors stacked at once — above-shoulder reach, reduced grip, and time pressure at the end of a rotation. Any one of them is manageable. Together they are the profile of most cold-store back and shoulder injuries. The fix is boring: move the step, or leave the top layer for after the break.
