How long is a manual handling certificate valid?

The legal duty is on the employer to make sure workers have training that is suitable and adequate for the risks of the work they do now. That is a continuing test, not a date on a card. A certificate from two years ago is still evidence you were trained; whether that training is still adequate depends on whether the job, the equipment or the site has changed since. That is why regulators talk about "refresher training as required" rather than a fixed term.

Because the law leaves it open, employers fill the gap with policy. The patterns we see across Australian warehouse and logistics sites:

• •Training at induction for every new starter, regardless of what they hold from elsewhere.
• •A refresher every one to three years, with two years the most common interval in written policies.
• •A specific course or an accredited unit (usually HLTWHS005) on some contracts, ports, mines and larger 3PL sites, sometimes with their own renewal window.
• •Ad-hoc refreshers after incidents, equipment changes or a return to work.

Our Certificate of Completion does not expire. It records the date you passed the 20-question assessment, your score and a unique ID in the format WHA-YYYY-XXXXXX that an employer can check on the verification page. Because the training and the assessment are free, refreshing costs nothing: go back through the modules, sit the assessment again, and, only if you want a newly dated certificate, add one for $39 AUD. It is non-accredited awareness training, so a site that requires an accredited unit will still need that.

How long is a manual handling certificate valid?

There is no legal expiry period for manual handling training in Australia. Neither the WHS laws nor the hazardous manual tasks code of practice set one. In practice, most employers and sites treat manual handling training as current for one to three years and ask for a refresher after that, or sooner if the job, equipment or workplace changes.

Does a Statement of Attainment for HLTWHS005 expire?

No. A Statement of Attainment for a nationally recognised unit does not carry an expiry date and stays on your training record. An employer or site can still require you to refresh it after a set period, and many do.

Does the Warehouse Handling Academy certificate expire?

No. The Certificate of Completion has no expiry date. It shows the date you passed the assessment, your result and a unique ID, and it can be verified online at any time. Whether an employer treats it as current is their decision, so check their refresher policy.

How often should manual handling training be refreshed?

Every one to three years is the most common employer policy, with two years a frequent middle ground. A refresher is also sensible whenever the task changes: new equipment, a new role, a return from injury, or a near miss. Because this course and its assessment are free, you can refresh as often as you like at no cost.

How do I check if my certificate is still accepted?

Ask the employer or site directly what they require: accredited or awareness training, and how recent it must be. For a Warehouse Handling Academy certificate, anyone can enter the certificate ID on the verification page to confirm it is genuine and see the completion date.

Can I renew online?

Yes. You can go back through the free course, sit the free assessment again, and, if you want a fresh dated certificate, add a new Certificate of Completion for $39 AUD after passing. There is no separate renewal fee or renewal course.
