  • Covers lifting and lowering, pushing trolleys and cages, and carrying over distance.
  • Know when a two-person lift or equipment beats muscle.

Common manual handling hazards for storepersons

  • Receiving and unloading deliveries, often against a delivery schedule.
  • Stock rotation — moving stock around to check dates and condition.
  • Preparing dispatch — stacking and securing loads for transport.
  • Working across variable storage heights and layouts through the day.

On the floor

A mixed pallet arrives with the driver waiting

A courier drops a mixed pallet in the receiving bay: 20 kg drums at the bottom, loose boxes on top, shrink-wrapped unevenly. The driver needs a signature and wants to leave. The storeperson starts breaking it down by hand, drums first, twisting to stack them beside the pallet.

Takeaway: Sign for the delivery, then handle it properly. The course's Hazardous Manual Tasks module covers assessing a load before you touch it (weight, grip, stability, destination) and using a pallet jack or trolley to move drums instead of lifting and twisting.

FAQ

Yes — pushing, pulling and carrying with trolleys and cages is covered in its own module, alongside general lifting technique.

An optional $39 AUD Certificate of Completion is available after you pass the free assessment, if you want a record for your employer or your own file.

Yes. The hazards are the same at any scale: unloading deliveries, moving stock between locations, stacking for dispatch and working at awkward heights. The examples are warehouse-based but the principles transfer directly to a stores room, a workshop store or a retail back-of-house.

Receiving is one of the recurring scenarios: checking the load before you touch it, breaking down mixed pallets, handling against a driver's schedule, and when a delivery should be refused or moved with equipment rather than by hand.

About an hour across eight modules, plus a free 20-question assessment with a 75% pass mark. You can stop and resume; progress is kept on your device.
