Module 6
Pushing, Pulling and Carrying
Cages, trolleys, ramps and long carries done safely.
7 minute read
Pushing is usually safer than pulling because you can use your body weight and see where you are going. Load equipment with heavy stock low and centred.
- Push rather than pull wherever possible
- Keep hands between waist and chest height on the handle
- Start and stop gradually; let the wheels do the work
- Report seized, flat or wobbling castors instead of forcing them
- Break long carries into stages, or use a trolley
- Take extra care on ramps, dock plates and wet concrete
Warehouse scenario
The sticky cage
A roll cage will not move. A worker braces hard and yanks it, feeling a sharp pull in their shoulder.
Takeaway: Sudden high force is a common injury cause. Check for a wheel lock or debris, get help, or tag the cage out of service.
