Module 5
Lifting and Lowering
A repeatable technique for cartons, totes and awkward stock.
8 minute read
Plan the lift before you touch the load. Know where it is going, check the path is clear, and test the weight by tilting a corner.
- Stand close with feet stable and shoulder-width apart
- Bend your hips and knees, keep your back in its natural curve
- Get a firm grip at diagonal corners
- Brace your core, then lift smoothly — no jerking
- Move your feet to turn; never twist under load
- Lower with the same control, using knees and hips
Above shoulder, below knee
The power zone is between mid-thigh and shoulder height. Loads outside that zone should be moved with equipment, a step platform, or a second person.
Knowledge check
You need to place a carton on racking above shoulder height. Best action?
