Module 3

Recognising Risk

Spot warning signs in the task, the load, the workplace and yourself.

7 minute read

Risk comes from four places: the task, the load, the environment, and the person doing the work. Checking all four before you start takes seconds.

  • Task — how often, how long, how much twisting or reaching
  • Load — weight, size, grip points, stability, shifting contents
  • Environment — floor condition, lighting, congestion, temperature, ramp gradients
  • Person — fatigue, experience, existing injury, rushing near end of shift

Early warning signs

Aching, stiffness, tingling or reduced grip strength are early signals. Report them early — a discomfort report is far easier to fix than an injury claim.

A carton is labelled 12 kg but the contents shift when you tilt it. What is the risk factor?
